Recession Leader?

Is Gordon Brown a Recession Leader? What do I mean by this? Well similarly to the economies ’boom and bust’ theory, we had Mrs Thatcher who lead the country for 11 years and 209 days and then what I describe as a failing recession leader we then had John Major for 6 years and 154 days. John Major had political problems from the very start with the ‘down to earth’ style that didn’t seem to work. After a workable majority in 1992 and the slow decline in majority for local councils and by-election losses opinion polls plummeted along with many defections from the party.

Looking at todays situation, after 10 years and 54 days of Tony Blair, Gordon Brown is the current Prime Minister. His ‘down to earth’ and hands on approach worked with the opinion polls to start with however consider them now, the situation is much worse than it was towards the end of the Major era with Labour’s biggest local election lose in 40 years. Is this a new conscious for political leaders and political parties in Westminster? To have a considerable amount of years with a larger majority to eventually plummet after the first leader resigns or gets forced out?

So the predications for the future can go a number of ways, Gordon Brown can do his best to secure a legacy as John Major did in Europe and at home with the Citizens Charter, and knowingly still lose the next election or he can claim that Labour can recover and carry on as he is picking up the pieces and fixing mistakes made by his cabinet and especially his chancellor. All I know is that it’s probable that as well as taking London the Conservatives have their best chance at winning the next election Since John Major.
